A SHORT HISTORY OF QUARANTINING

The practice of isolating the sick so disease does not spread and make others ill is an ancient one. The Old Testament, for example, refers to the custom of isolating lepers. The word quarantine itself comes from fourteenth-century Italy—a time of the plague (aka, the Black Death). The plague (which was actually a germ called Yersinia pestis) claimed the lives of up to twenty-five million people across Europe, with some areas seeing a mortality rate of two-thirds of the population. Boats arriving in the busy port of Venice from regions known to be rampant with disease were required to anchor off the coast for forty days—or quaranta giorni—before docking. The phrase quaranta giorni evolved into “quarantine.”
